Structure

AGC of America is governed by a Management Committee, Executive Board and Board of Directors. These governing bodies represent member firms from every state and construction market.

The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Association. The Board has full authority to define policy governing its own conduct and the affairs of the Association. A primary responsibility of Directors is to facilitate communication between AGC of America and Chapters. The Board is composed of the Officers, the Executive Board, Elected Directors, Past AGC Presidents and Additional Directors.

Chapters

As of April 2010, AGC has 95 chapters nationwide.[2]

Honors and Awards

AGC's awards programs recognize the nation's most pioneering projects and talented contractors with outstanding performance in safety training, partnering, innovation and education.

The AGC/Aon Build America Awards honor construction projects built by AGC members ranging across the building, highway and transportation, municipal and utilities, and federal and heavy divisions.

Named for AGC's 1991 President Marvin M. Black - an ardent supporter of the partnering process - the Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards recognize successful partnerships and collaborations that work to improve construction projects.

AGC created this awards category in 2008 to recognize the most innovative and collaborative training and development programs throughout the construction industry.

AGC of America has established several award programs to recognize the achievements of its local chapters.

Annually, the AGC Foundation awards three different prizes; Klinger Research Award, Outstanding Educator Award and the Student Essay Competition.

The AGC Electronic Information Systems (EIS) Committee conducts Technology Showcases to help AGC contractors maintain their knowledge by promoting contractor-to-contractor exchange of information, ideas, and real world experience with information technology.

AGC in the Community is an initiative of AGC Charities, Inc., designed to showcase the community service projects of AGC of America's chapters. Debuting at AGC of America's 90th Annual Convention, it recognizes charitable chapter projects through actual hands-on service and donations to charitable organizations that local members are involved with. The AGC in the Community Awards will be given each year during the Opening Session at AGC of America's Annual Convention in March.

Awards Received

In 2008 AGC received the first Honor Award presented to an association. According to the National Building Museum, who presents the award annually, AGC was selected for "building America’s quality of life and promoting construction excellence, including safety, through training, advocacy, and the dissemination of best practices to contractors nationwide."[3]

Advocacy

AGC is an advocate for the construction industry in Congress, before the federal agencies, the administration, and in the courts. AGC has a team of advocates located in a townhouse one block from the U.S. Capitol. These particular staff work directly with elected officials and government agencies to encourage additional investment in infrastructure, tax policies that promote investment, common-sense tort reform and immigration reform, which are among AGC's top priorities.

AGC's legal advocacy staff monitors nationally significant legal cases that either promise to improve or threaten to damage the business environment in the construction industry. In addition to the government affairs and legal staff, AGC maintains a $1 million political action committee - AGC PAC and a network of grassroots activists.

Education and Training

AGC Education and Research Foundation

The AGC Education and Research Foundation, founded in 1968, provides educational and research programs. The foundation's primary purposes are to grant college students educational scholarships, recognize outstanding educators, sponsor an annual student essay competition, and support a wide array of industry-related educational programs.

Annual convention

AGC's Annual Convention provides an opportunity for contractors to get information on current economic forecasts, rules and regulations, and best practices, and to hear first-hand from others on what they are doing to survive and thrive in this challenging economy.

AGC's 92nd Annual Convention is scheduled for March 21–25, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada[4]
